Running Commentary

How often has this happened with you that you visited a site and after that which ever site you went to, you started seeing the ads of the site you visited? If you know anything about web and browsers you know it is the cookies that were planted by the site. Cookies are nothing but small text files containing some information about the client machine. Often harmless and mostly used by sites to give you a tailor-made experience whenever you visit the site next, but very annoying in some cases like the one I just mentioned. Browsers give you facility to clear either the entire browsing history (which includes visited sites, cookies, cache, form data etc.) or individual items and you can delete all the cookies in one go. But if you want to see which sites have planted cookies in your machine and clear only the ones you want to, read on. Chrome:  Click on the 'Wrench Menu'. Click on 'Show Advanced Settings'. Under 'Privacy', click on 'Content Settings...

At least Google seems to think so. Take a look at any of the Chrome download pages here or the Beta download page here . Nowhere we see the version numbers. So unless you download a version and install it you won't know which version are you going to use! Neat huh? Considering the fact that most of the Chrome users are early technology adopters and have switched from Firefox (which seems to give an overdose of versions!) this is moronic in my opinion. There are other and better ways to keep your homepage clean but not specifying version numbers? I am not sure!

Above is the snapshot of downloads across the world at 1.53 PM IST on June 18 2008. According to details on this page: US had 2,095, 322 downloads and India downloaded just 42,770 times. I downloaded it in my office, which has actually got a US IP address and I guess many people in India downloaded it in their offices and that counted towards US's downloads. Internet penetration in India is still very low and mostly people access net in their offices only. I am not saying that all office downloads swelled US numbers or the cause of a huge US number is due to us only, but this could be a significant number. I don't know if FF3 has created a record or not, but the fact is that record or no-record, FF3 is a better browser in all aspects!

I admit that my most popular blog is not that popular, but that doesn't mean that I will tolerate any body messing up with it! Have a look at this: http://removing.blogspot.com If you are reading this blog in Firefox, you won't notice a thing (except my posts ofcourse!) but if you are on IE, you will see something like this: These 'comments' have been inserted by blogger when I draft the post, and since these are comments they should not be displayed. Right? Wrong, if I am using IE! What is it? Why is it? When will it be over?
